Relationship and community building are one of the many reasons I’m grateful for the work and ministry of Mennonite Central Committee. Our Wednesday evening sessions have already given us a glimpse of this “faith in action” through stories and updates giving concrete examples of love of enemy and neighbor alike. I also find MCC’s e-memo communications encouraging and insightful (there are multiple e-resources MCC offers – check them out here https://mcc.org/subscriptions). Below are the opening paragraphs from the October 2024 National Peace and Justice Ministries E-Memo, offering some perspective on this election season. To read more from MCC, including numerous articles about the war in Gaza and MCC’s relief work there, visit their website: https://mcc.org/
Excerpt from MCC’s October 2024 E-Memo…
In this deeply polarized election season, it can be tempting to withdraw from the political process altogether. However, whether we like it or not, U.S. government policies greatly impact the lives of people in the U.S. and around the world.
If we take loving our neighbor seriously, we must continue to work faithfully toward a more just and equitable society. For those able to vote, this means discerning who will make the best decisions for the common good. While remembering our ultimate allegiance is to God and not to any political parties, we can carefully assess candidates at the local, state, and national levels, seeking to be “wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16).
We can also do our part to model and encourage healthy dialogue on divisive topics, whether in community meetings, church sanctuaries, or family gatherings:
- Peaceful Practices
- Peaceful Practices conversation guides
- Talk Climate, Practice Peace podcast | virtual workshop
- Forty days of prayer (United Church of Christ resource)
On election day next week (Nov 5) the sanctuary here at FMC will be open for prayer between 10am-5pm, with a short corporate time of worship/prayer offered at 12:30pm and 4:30pm. We’ll be using a prayer resource (Praying together for our election) offered by Ruth Haley Barton at Transforming Community, which you can also use on your own or with a different group, if that works better in your schedule.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2024 – DO UNTO OTHERS: Week 2
The Polarization Within: Compassion
Isaiah 11:6-9
Because we are complex beings living in a complex world, we sometimes deal with conflict within us in addition to the conflict between us. Research tells us that because we humans are desperate for a sense of cohesion and belonging in these confusing times, we are hanging onto ideological generalities instead of treating ourselves and each other with the compassion required to alleviate despair.

Here’s how Mike describes his presentation:
In an approachable and easy-to-understand format, we will discuss the impact we can make on the organizations and programs we value (in this case, the congregation and the conference) by leveraging estate assets. The program includes examples of impactful planning done well (and examples of poor planning), why and how to plan, resources available to help in the process, how planning can express our values and faith stewardship. It all starts with consideration of the question, “what would you like to do with your financial resources that would be meaningful to you and impactful for the congregation and/or the conference. We will also discuss options for making outright gifts beyond writing a check.
CURRENT WORSHIP SERIES: DO UNTO OTHERS
Our world seems to be consumed with division–often typified in the colors red and blue. Rather than stay in our monochromatic silos, the Golden Rule in scripture challenges us to engage in conversation andseek to create whatever common good we can with our relatives, friends, and neighbors who we might consider to be on the “other side” politically and ideologically. As we attempt to come together, the idea is not that we are obliterating either one or trying to change each other, but rather we discover the beauty that can be created when we work together to make the world a better place. The “purple space” is where
we cultivate kindness, compassion, humility, respect, and love for one another and for the good of all the world, no matter what. This series was created as a collaboration between Worship Design Studio and Resurrection, a United Methodist Church, for the 2024 Kindness Campaign, “Do Unto Others.” We’ll be adapting it for our use at First Mennonite as we make our way through and beyond the election season.
